Hearths were very important, for their heat was necessary for the processing of many medicaments. Alchemy played a main role for the development of the equipment of the laboratory. Though the medieval Europe of the 12th century got slowly acquainted with the Arabian alchemy, only few of its methods and techniques were used at first. Not until the time of Paracelsus (1493/94 - 1541) an increasing reception of alchemic methods can be proved. Soon pharmacy couldn't be imagined without distillation. (museum notes)
